Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to get it up, or keep it up, to a level of satisfactory performance. ED is an extremely common condition that affects men at any age, but more commonly affects men as they age. Approximately 12 million men over the age of 40 are affected by ED. Causes of ED can essentially be broken down into two categories, physical vs psychologic.
Physical causes include things like uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and low testosterone. Lifestyle factors including excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and inadequate exercise are also associated with ED. Medications (like Viagra), work by increasing blood flow to the penis. Increased blood flow provides stronger and longer lasting erections - enabling men to get the job done.
Psychologic causes more commonly affect younger males and include things like depression, performance anxiety (premature ejaculation), and troubled relationships. Counseling can often be very helpful in many situations (personal and relationship counseling). Some anti-depressants are associated with ED – and switching to an alternative medication could be a simple fix.
Regardless of the cause, Erectile Dysfunction is nothing to be embarrassed about. If you’re one of the millions of men suffering from symptoms of ED, don’t let it keep you down any longer. Let us know what’s going on - we’ll get you up and running in no time.
